Today we celebrate a huge milestone in the worldwide movement to take down the fossil fuel industry that is driving the climate crisis:
Over 1000 institutions worldwide, worth almost 11 trillion AUD, have committed to divest from the world’s biggest oil, coal and gas companies!
In Australia just this week, Wollongong City Council announced that they would divest, adding their name to the list of 45 other councils with divestment motions in Australia!
With the IPCC’s stark warning that we have to act now to keep temperatures from warming above 1.5 C, this is a pivotal moment for the Fossil Free movement to celebrate our rapid progress.
This momentum has been driven by a people-powered grassroots movement – ordinary people like you and me pushing our local institutions to take a stand against the fossil fuel industry contributing directly to climate change and exacerbating bushfires, droughts and floods.
We can build a Fossil Free world powered by fast and fair 100% renewable energy — by holding our leaders accountable, by protesting in the streets, by organising in our communities, and chipping in whatever money we can spare.
We’ve got a short window of opportunity. But as we scale up for the fight of our lives, remember to look to the people around the world who are in this fight with you on the front lines and see just how much we can accomplish when we work together for a Fossil Free world.
PS. Next year is going to be a crucial moment for the climate movement in Australia. Our grassroots groups have important, locally-focussed campaigns in their community, and the 350 community will be undertaking an ambitious Vote #1.5 election campaign. Chip in to grow a powerful climate campaign for 2019.
