Carmichael approval re-affirms Coalition’s love for dirty coal

(SYDNEY)— 350.org Australia is strongly opposed to Environment Minister Greg Hunt’s re-approval of the highly controversial mega Carmichael coal mine in central Queensland.

Responding to the re-approval announcement today, 350.org Australia spokesperson Josh Creaser made these comments:

“It’s clear a Turnbull-led Coalition is still wedded to irresponsible and unnecessary coal projects that threaten our climate, communities, water and health.

“In the lead up to the Paris climate talks, Australia’s major export partners and allies are leading a move away from coal. The re-approval of this mega coal mine shows that our Government remains out of touch and unwilling to protect our communities from dirty coal.

“Most of the world’s largest investors have distanced themselves from this project. They know it’s a reputational and environmental disaster and it’s time our Environment Minister, Prime Minister and the Coalition caught up.

Already, 14 global banks have ruled out involvement with the Carmichael project due to financial and environmental concerns and growing public backlash.
