Australian Academy of Science Divests from Fossil Fuels

(SYDNEY)– 350.org Australia applauds the Australian Academy of Science on its announcement to join over 450 global institutions in moving its investments away from coal, oil and gas.

“We applaud the Academy of Science’s decision to put its money where its mouth is. Comprising 450 of Australia’s leading scientists, many of whom research and teach on climate change, it makes perfect sense that the Academy divests from the industry driving the climate crisis, said Charlie Wood, Campaigns Director for 350.org Australia.

“As Academy President Professor Andrew Holmes heads to the Greenhouse 2015 climate conference in Hobart to announce the decision, we hope his leadership brushes off on the University of Tasmania where students are in the midst of a 2-week sit-in over the University’s refusal to divest, despite 2 years of campaigning from students and staff.

“It is time for all of our research and educational institutions to follow in the footsteps of the Academy of Science and the hundreds of institutions world-wide who have refused to use their investments to prop up dirty fossil fuels,” concluded Ms Wood.
