While the primary work on these campaigns has wrapped up, our current campaigns are all built on the success, the hard work and the communities brought together during these previous endeavours.
Accelerate Climate Action
We’re already moving towards a future without fossil fuels – but it’s time to accelerate our response. As a part of 350 Australia’s push to make sure that climate change will be front and centre of every election going forward, our founder, Bill McKibben, came back to Australia at the end of April and early May in 2018 as part of a global effort to accelerate climate action.
Despite more than two decades of talking, our climate is at a crisis point because our leaders have allowed themselves to be captured by the fossil fuel industry. If our politicians are serious about climate change, then they need to stop taking money from and giving money to the big polluters.
At over 450 events in 60 countries, people around the world declared that it’s wrong to wreck the climate — and it’s wrong to profit from wrecking it.
From the Pacific Islands to South Africa, from the United States to Germany, we stood up to demand that our governments, universities and financial and religious institutions stop investing in the rogue industries that are destroying our planet. It was a massive turning point in the divestment movement with people across six continents fighting to de-legitimize the fossil fuel industry.
This campaign united a powerful movement of farmers, Traditional Owners, doctors, environmental groups, religious leaders and many others — to stop the construction of the huge Maules Creek Coal Mine in the endangered Leard State Forest.
