AGL’s exit from Gloucester gas a fantastic first step — Now time to exit all fossil fuels

SYDNEY, 4th February – 350.org Australia welcomes AGL Energy’s rejection of the Gloucester coal seam gas project and congratulates the community on their long-sought victory.

“2016 is the year we must turn the curve on fossil fuels and the dumping of the Gloucester gas project is a great start, said Josh Creaser, Frontline Projects coordinator with 350.org Australia.

“This wonderful win is testament to the power of community pressure and persistence in the face of reckless fossil fuel projects.

“However, AGL remains Australia’s most polluting company and owner of our dirtiest coal-fired power station. They still have a long way to go to clean up their act.

“If AGL is serious about tackling climate change, they must now come up with a plan to close down their coal fired power stations in the coming years, not the coming decades.

“It’s time for AGL to to put words into action and get to work building the transition to a truly clean energy future,” said Mr Creaser.

In 2016, pressure will only grow stronger for AGL and all the big polluters to get out of all fossil fuels.
